How to flip furniture on Facebook Marketplace: a search that skips the junk

To flip furniture on Facebook Marketplace, choose one or two types you can move and store, write a search with the words sellers use locally and the words to leave out, cap your buy price at a share of the resale value such as 65%, inspect before paying, and relist with the brand and dimensions in the listing.

To flip furniture on Facebook Marketplace, pick one or two kinds of furniture you can move and store, write a search that leaves out the listings you would skip anyway, buy only under a price you set from the resale value, then clean, photograph and relist with the brand and dimensions in the listing. Most of the time goes into the search, so most of this guide is about that.

Step 1: Pick what you will flip

Choose by what you can carry, store and resell. A van and a garage open up sofas and dining sets. A hatchback and a spare room point you to chairs, side tables and small dressers.

Furniture that is often worth flipping:

Type Why it can work What to watch
Sofas and sectionals Buyers search by type, brand and model Size, smell, bed bugs, moving
Dressers and sideboards Solid wood can be cleaned or refinished Veneer damage, drawers that stick
Dining sets Sell as a set or split chairs and table Wobbly joints, missing chairs
Bed frames Buyers search by size, such as queen or king Missing hardware, bed bugs
Office chairs Model names like Aeron or Leap make them easy to look up Worn mesh, broken tilt

Start with one type. You learn prices faster, and your search stays short. For sofas specifically, the guide to heavy-item flipping covers trucks, storage and pickup.

A furniture search has four parts: the words a listing must have, the words that rule it out, a price range, and a distance. Write them down before you start scrolling.

An example setup for sofas in a US city:

  • Words to include: sectional, couch, sofa, L shaped, modular
  • Words to leave out: cover, covers only, cushions only, for parts, broken, wanted, ISO, rent to own, financing
  • Price: $50 to $900
  • Distance: 30 miles, or the distance you will drive for a pickup today

The minimum price matters as much as the maximum. A floor removes free and $1 listings, where the price shown is often not the real price. If you also collect free furniture, run that as its own search; our guide to free items for resale covers it.

Use the words sellers use where you live

Sellers in different countries use different words for the same piece. A search that misses them misses listings.

Country Words to add
United States sectional, couch, loveseat, dresser, nightstand
United Kingdom corner sofa, settee, chaise, sideboard, chest of drawers
Australia lounge, modular, chaise, buffet, tallboy

An Australian listing for a "3 seater lounge" may not contain the word sofa at all, and a UK "corner sofa" may never say L shaped.

Leave words out before you shrink the price

A broad couch search in a large city returns more listings than one person can read. The fix is not a lower price cap. A lower cap hides good pieces whose sellers would take an offer. Left-out words remove the listings you already know you do not want, such as covers, parts and stores. Our guide to excluded words explains the method in detail.

Stores and dealers post on Marketplace too, and they are not filtered out automatically. Leave out the words they use, such as "financing", "rent to own" and "brand new in box", or skip their seller pages.

Step 3: Decide in two minutes whether to message

Open each listing and check it against a short list:

  1. Does the price fit your buy cap? A simple rule is 65% of the expected resale price, so the rest covers moving, cleaning and profit.
  2. Is there a brand or model you can confirm from a photo of the tag?
  3. Do the photos show the whole piece, including the seams and the underside?
  4. Can you move it with what you have?

If the answer to any of these is no, skip it. The guide to triaging deal alerts has more on keeping this quick.

Step 4: Message, inspect and pay

Ask one specific question in your first message, such as the dimensions or whether there are pets in the home, and say when you can pick it up. Inspect before you pay. On upholstered pieces, check the seams and under the cushions for dark spots or rusty stains, which the EPA lists among the signs of bed bugs. On wood pieces, pull every drawer and look at the back panel.

Never pay a deposit to hold a piece you have not seen, and never pay a delivery fee up front. The buyer scams guide lists the common patterns. For negotiating once you are there, see how to negotiate on Facebook Marketplace.

Step 5: Clean, photograph and relist

Do the work buyers notice and skip the work they do not. Vacuum and spot clean upholstery according to the cleaning code on the tag. Tighten loose legs and replace missing knobs. Refinishing a dresser can raise its price, but it takes days, so count the time.

Your relisting is a search result too. Put the brand, model and type in the title, such as "Crate & Barrel Lounge sofa", and the dimensions in the description. Photograph in daylight from the front and at an angle. Price against what similar listings ask in your area, and leave room for offers.

Step 6: Track every flip

Write down what you paid, what you spent on moving and cleaning, how long the piece sat, and what it sold for. After ten flips you will know which type of furniture pays you for the hours and which does not. That record is worth more than any list of "best things to flip", because it is about your area and your costs.

Run the search on Crawlbench

Put the setup from Step 2 into one Crawlbench search, written the way you would say it, for example "sectional or sofa from $50 to $900 within 30 miles". Add the words to leave out. Crawlbench checks each new Facebook Marketplace listing that matches against similar listings and sends the ones that pass by email, Telegram, Slack, Discord or the phone app. You message the seller yourself.

Questions

How much can you make flipping furniture on Facebook Marketplace?
It depends on your buy price, your costs and your area, and there is no reliable public figure. Work it out per flip: resale price minus what you paid, minus moving, cleaning and supplies. Track ten flips and you will know your own number.
What furniture is easiest to flip?
Pieces buyers search for by type or brand and that you can move easily: office chairs with known model names, small dressers and nightstands, dining chairs and bed frames. Sofas and sectionals can pay more but need a vehicle, a helper and a bed bug check.
Do you need to refinish furniture to flip it?
No. Many flips only need cleaning, tightening and good photos. Refinishing can raise the price of a solid wood dresser or table, but it takes days, so count the time before you take it on.
What should I search for besides 'sofa'?
Use the words sellers use where you live. In the US add sectional, couch and loveseat. In the UK add corner sofa and settee. In Australia add lounge and modular. Each search misses the listings that only use the local word.
