On a correctly priced Tacoma in a major metro, the listing often has a half-life of about one hour. Not because the algorithm is magic. Because five other buyers have the same saved search, one person is already driving over with cash, and the seller learns in the first twenty minutes whether they priced too low.
I call this the first-hour rule: if you are not in the seller's inbox early, your "great negotiation" never gets a reply.
The window is shorter than it feels
Sellers post when they have a window: lunch break, kid's nap, Sunday cleanup. They are emotionally ready to answer for about 30–90 minutes. After that, life happens, other messages stack up, and they pick the easiest buyer.
That easiest buyer is usually:
- First or second to ask a clear question
- Ready to pick up soon
- Not asking for ten photos before confirming the car exists
You do not win by sending a novel. You win by being early and normal.
Latency beats skill
Two buyers with the same offer. Buyer A messages 12 minutes after post. Buyer B messages 3 hours later because a notification arrived late.
Seller psychology at hour zero: "Let me see who is serious."
Seller psychology at hour three: "Someone is coming tomorrow with a deposit."
Buyer B might be a better negotiator. Buyer A gets the appointment.
This is why flippers obsess over alerts instead of spreadsheets. Spreadsheets help you analyze deals you never got to buy.
What eats your hour
Most self-inflicted delay looks like this:
- Notification arrives late (saved search, email digest, phone on silent)
- You open the listing without rules and re-decide from scratch (salvage? distance? weird photos?)
- You compare five tabs of similar listings that will still be there tomorrow
- You draft a perfect message while someone else sends "Still available?"
Steps 2 and 3 are fixable with a written buy box. Step 1 is fixable with a check cadence you trust.
Shorten time-to-message
Treat every serious monitor as a race to one sent message, not a research session.
Before the alert:
- Pass/fail rules written (year, price, excluded terms)
- Template in your clipboard: short, calm, specific
- Pickup geography decided (you already know how far you drive for margin)
When the alert fires:
- Open listing once
- If it fails a hard rule, close and log nothing
- If it passes, send the template. VIN and negotiation come after reply
Goal metric: median time from listing post to your first message under 20 minutes on targets you care about. If you cannot measure post time, measure time from alert to message and tighten alert latency.
Scheduled checks vs hope
Hope is checking Marketplace when you think of it. A schedule is opening newest-first at 7am, 12pm, and 6pm, or running 10-minute fan-out checks that ping you only when a row clears filters.

The first-hour rule applies most to:
- Popular models priced clearly under market
- Clean-title daily drivers
- Dense metros with many active buyers
If your buy box is narrow and slow-moving, optimize for diligence, not ping speed. If your buy box is "anything under KBB in the first 48 hours," optimize for latency.
Monday morning habit
Pick one listing you lost last month. Write the timestamp you found it vs when it posted (estimate if you must). If the gap is over an hour on a hot row, change the system:
- Tighter filters (less noise, faster decisions)
- Faster alert path (Telegram over email)
- One message template, no rewrite
Speed is not rudeness. On Marketplace, speed is still being in the conversation when the seller is paying attention.
